The reason why ECM and DM are separated is that they focus on the content / data and on the technologies and processes needed to capture, store, manage and deliver those. This is the reason why there is a void between ECM and BI. There IS a difference in how highly structured content (data) and unstructured content need to be captured, stored, managed and delivered. But what is more important is that users need INFORMATION, which can be encoded and stored both as structured and unstructured content. So to find and access the information a user need, she might have to search in different applications/systems and put the puzzle together herself.

EIM focuses on the use of information, regardless if it comes from highly structured content (data) or unstructured content.

Regards,
Oscar

Hi Oscar,

Nice analogy, and good to see tha...

Hi Oscar,

Nice analogy, and good to see that a carefull analysis of the two definitions indeed delivers one of the major differences in EIM and ECM, being the focus on information needs by knowledge workers. We have concluded that we need to look at Usability for finding ways to analyse information needs, for instance by using persona modelling.

However, there's one difference that I do see in the definitions, and that also deserves some attention. Where ECM covers "content", being unstructured "information" (in the technology sense of the word), EIM also looks at "data" (structured).

In my opinion, EIM blends ECM and Business Intelligence into one area, and with that blending iprocess shifts focus from technological capabilities to infomation needs (being data or content) of users.

Kind regards,

Paul Baan
